Name: Laura Pauley
Company name & website: staff journalist
Age (optional):
- I currently work for a leading business-to-business publisher. We are the largest independent publisher in the North of England, publishing national and regional titles as well as websites.
- While backpacking around Australia I started to keep an online diary so all my friends and family could keep up to date on my movements. I really enjoyed writing and so, decided to look into a career in journalism.
- While working in finance I undertook a number of self-study courses to teach myself the basics, and begun freelancing for free. This wasn’t the easiest of moves when you have no experience, but through the ‘gift of the gab’ I managed to get enough freelancing work to build up my portfolio. This included writing gig reviews, travel features and press releases for companies, to name a few.
- I have since got a full time staff job as a journalist and now studying towards my NCTJ qualification, where you learn law, politics and shorthand.
- Tip For success:
- Drive, determination and a great sense of humour
